Prenatal Screening

NON-INVASIVE PRENATAL TEST (NIPT)

NIPT is a blood test performed on the pregnant woman starting week 10 of pregnancy. It is done to detect at an early stage any chromosomal abnormalities such as trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome)and trisomy 18. It usually analyzes fragments of the fetal DNA. While highly accurate, NIPT is a screening test, and a positive result requires confirmation with a diagnostic test like amniocentesis or CVS. Note that NIPT does not screen all kinds of genetic conditions and is not recommended for twins or triplets pregnancies. It also reveals the gender of the baby.

PLACENTAL GROWTH FACTOR (PLGF)

PLGF is a protein that plays a key role in blood vessel formation and is used to help detect pre-eclampsia during pregnancies. It is a simple blood test that is done between week 10 & 37 of pregnancy. PLGF is produced by the placenta and is vital for its growth and development, ensuring an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus.
